How this calculator works
Room area is Length × Width in square feet. A waste allowance is added on top to cover trim cuts, damaged planks, and pattern matching — typically 7–10% depending on material and layout. The waste-adjusted area is divided by how many square feet one box covers, rounded up to the next full box.
Example calculation
Project: a 12 ft × 11 ft bedroom in laminate, boxes covering 18 ft² each, 10% waste.
- Room area = 12 × 11 = 132 ft²
- With 10% waste = 132 × 1.10 = 145.2 ft²
- Boxes needed = 145.2 ÷ 18 ≈ 9 boxes
Buying & material guidance
Vinyl plank flooring typically needs the least waste (5–7%) since planks are uniform and easy to work with. Laminate is similar at around 10%. Solid hardwood, especially installed diagonally or in a herringbone pattern, often needs 10–15% to account for grain matching and trickier cuts.
Buy all boxes from the same production lot when possible, and let hardwood and laminate acclimate in the room for 48–72 hours before installing to reduce expansion/contraction issues later.

As a general rule, run planks parallel to the room's longest wall or the main light source (like a row of windows) — this typically looks most natural and can also reduce the number of cuts needed.

A 15 ft × 12 ft room is 180 square feet. With a standard 10% waste allowance, you'd need about 198 square feet of flooring — roughly 9 boxes if each box covers 22 square feet.
How much extra flooring should I buy?+
5-7% extra is typical for vinyl plank, and 10% is standard for laminate and hardwood. Diagonal or herringbone hardwood layouts often need 15% to account for more complex cuts.
Should hardwood flooring acclimate before installing?+
Yes — solid hardwood and many engineered products should sit in the installation room for 48-72 hours before installing, so the wood can adjust to the room's humidity and temperature and reduce gapping or buckling later.
How much does it cost to install flooring per square foot?+
Installed cost varies a lot by material: vinyl plank typically runs $3–$8 per square foot installed, laminate $4–$9, and solid hardwood $8–$15 or more, including materials and labor. Removing old flooring or leveling the subfloor first will add to the total.
How much flooring do I need for an entire house?+
Add up the square footage of every room getting new flooring (measure each room separately since waste percentages can differ by material and layout), then apply this calculator to each room individually — a whole-house total is just the sum of the per-room box counts.
What is the cheapest flooring option?+
Vinyl plank (LVP) is typically the cheapest durable option, often $1–$4 per square foot for materials alone, with laminate close behind. Solid hardwood and natural stone tile are usually the most expensive, both in material cost and waste allowance.
How do I calculate flooring for an L-shaped or irregular room?+
Split the room into two or more rectangles, calculate the area of each separately (length × width), then add them together for the total square footage before applying your waste allowance — this calculator's area field accepts that combined total directly.
